FreeCAL is a new and improved formulation of a proven product designed to remedy soils that are irrigated with marginal water and are high in salts and bicarbonates. These soil conditions generally result in poor water infiltration, low nutrient availability and poor turf vigor which prevent turf from responding adequately to "normal" fertilizer applications.

FreeCAL is a patented (4,797,220; 5,451,335; 5,322,635), proprietary technology that features a safe, short chain carbon quaternary of organic carboxylic acid, organic amine, premium soil penetrant, and soil re-wetting technology. FreeCAL is highly active at low rates and because it is not a "strong" acid (pH of 3.5) it is very plant tolerant showing no documented occurrences of phytotoxicity in exhaustive testing and commercial use.

MODES OF ACTIVITY IN SOILS:

FreeCAL's reaction with Lime (CaCO3) or Gypsum (CaSO4), that are generally found in all soils, are the sources of free CALCIUM (Ca++) for use as a key nutrient and to displace Sodium (Na+) and other salts that are attached to soil exchange sites. This process is the key to "flushing" salts through the soil profile and out of the plant root zone. "Flushing" salts opens soils and allows for water and oxygen penetration and improvement of nutrient availability.

FreeCAL causes 3 reactions in soils:

  1. Lime reacts with the organic acid component to form free CALCIUM, which is 5 times more soluble than Gypsum. Thus, a reaction with FreeCAL will provide free CALCIUM that is 5 times more available for use as a nutrient or in an exchange reaction. Any un-reacted active material, will aid in penetration or remain available for future reactions.
  2. The Amine component in FreeCAL is available to form a salt with many of the cationic metals that will now be highly available for root absorption. Additional reactions with Nitrate, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, and Iron ions will also render these nutrients more plant available.
  3. The addition of the premium penetrating and re-wetting technology cuts water tension that facilitates increased water infiltration over time, through any soil profile so that the salts are easily "flushed".

FreeCAL's Features and Benefits:

  • Improves water infiltration in most soils and increases solubility of minerals and nutrients.
  • Reduces bonds of calcium carbonates and calcium phosphates so that free CALCIUM (Ca++) will displace Sodium (Na+) and other salts on soil exchange sites.
  • Dissociates chemical bonds and frees CALCIUM in water and soils under hydration in order to "flush" soils for moving any build-up of salts and to re-charge gravitational and capillary water in most soil types.
  • FreeCal improves CALCIUM availability which buffers pH.
  • Soil Nutrient Base Saturation ratios will become more balanced and anions such as sulfates, will stabilize.
  • Nutrient solubility and uptake from soil reservoir will be increased.
  • FreeCAL is a soil amendment and it does not contain any plant nutrients.
  • FreeCAL Improves root mass and increases nutrient cycling potential.
  • FreeCAL will not create zones of excess soil acidity, often characteristic of "high risk, strong" acidifiers.
  • FreeCAL uses no added buffering agents such as urea that may limit or interfere with nutrient ratios.
  • FreeCAL contains soil penetrants and rewetting compounds that aid in depth of soil reaction and water penetration
  • Total water requirements for the "salts flushing" process are substantially decreased.
  • FreeCAL is a highly soluble and SAFE organic acid that is biodegradable, breaking down to minerals, oxygen and water.
  • Non caustic and non corrosive for safe use by workers and equipment.
  • FreeCAL causes no phytotoxic affects on plants.
  • No detrimental effects on fish, fowl, or beneficial soil microbes. FreeCAL is classified as a "Green" label product by the Chemical Manufacturers Association.
  • Low volatility so the product will not evaporate between application and regularly scheduled irrigation cycles.
  • Active ingredients are EPA approved for use in potable water.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE AND RECOMMENDED APPLICATION RATES FOR TURF:
Sprayable: All conventional spray equipment can be used to apply FreeCAL over the top of turf.
CURATIVE: Correcting salt impacted soils: 43-64 ounces/acre or 1-1.5 oz. per 1000 sq. ft. in 2-4 gallons of water in 2-4 consecutive weekly treatments. FreeCAL may be tank mixed. Refer to all tank mixed product labels for proper application. Jar test for compatibility is recommended.
MAINTENANCE: 24-36 ounces/acre or 0.5 - 0.75 oz per 1000 sq. ft. weekly in 2-4 gallons of water following Curative applications. If bi-monthly applications are utilized instead of weekly, multiply rate by a factor of 2.2.
Fertigation with fertilizers:
Add FreeCAL to liquid fertilizer bulk tank at a rate based on tank size:
500 Gal tank add 45 to 55 gallons for bimonthly supply
1000 Gal tank add 90-110 gallons for month's supply
*Use high rate for high salt impacted areas.
*Always Test compatibility with a jar test.
